Testing Service Speed

When you use Speedtest.net it automatically chooses a server closest to you. If you are in the US and have an Italian proxy when you perform a speed test with the proxy enabled it will pick a server in Italy. When you disable the proxy it will pick a server in the US. As speed issues can be caused by infrastructure in or en route to the destination, you need to test your connection with the proxy/VPN disabled with a Speedtest.net server in the same location as the proxy/VPN server.

Step 1 – Test the Proxy/VPN speeds

  1. Enable your proxy or VPN.
  2. Go to http://speedtest.net
  3. Click Begin Test.
    • Speedtest will automatically pick a location for you.
  4. Note the location and host displayed in the bottom right corner of the test.
  5. Note the Ping and Download speed results.
  6. To be sure these results are typical, repeat this test a few times by clicking the Test Again button at the bottom of the test results.

Step 2 – Test your connection with the same Speedtest.net server using the map

  1. Be sure the proxy and/or VPN connection is disabled.
  2. Using the map, find the location from the test in Step 1.
    • Click on the world map or drag the green box to show the desired area in the upper local map.
    • Zoom in or out and drag the upper local map.
    • Server locations are denoted by white circles, hover over the circles to see the city name and country code.
  3. Once you have found the server location, hover over the white circle to find the host (some locations have more than one host, others only have one)
  4. Click on the server name to start the test.
  5. Note the Ping and Download speed results.
  6. To be sure these results are typical, repeat this test a few times by clicking the Test Again button at the bottom of the test results.

Can’t find the location on the map? – Test your connection with the same Speedtest.net server using settings.

  1. Be sure the proxy and/or VPN connection is disabled.
  2. Click on the Settings button at the top of the Speedtest.net website.
  3. Find the Preferred Server drop-down at the bottom right of this page, next to Global Settings.
  4. From the drop-down, choose the same server location that you noted when testing your Proxy/VPN.
    • Servers are listed alphabetical by city. To jump to your city click on the drop-down then start typing the city name.
  5. Click the Save button
  6. Click the Take a Speed Test button at the top right of the settings.
  7. You should see two Begin Test buttons, click the one on the right labeled Begin Test – Your Preferred Server.
  8. Note the Ping and Download speed results.
  9. To be sure these results are typical, repeat this test a few times by clicking the Test Again button at the bottom of the test results.
